Most people do not know that euthanasia is not an option. Even in the Netherlands, where prosecution only involves a fine, it is not legal. In the U.S. state of Oregon, a law allowing doctors to prescribe lethal drugs to ally ill patients has been passed but not implemented because of legal challenges.
Dr. Philip Nitschke, working in the Australian outback, is the center of a medical, political and moral storm that from the Vatican to the Aborigines' camp fires. "Dr. Death," as he is sometimes called, has performed Euthanasia and has developed a "suicide pill" which is currently being tested by doctors in the V.S. and Canada.
His North American colleague, Dr. Jack Kevorkian, has also helped dozens of people kill themselves, but in both cases, the doctors are careful to "assist in suicide" and patients must take the terminal action themselves.
A courtroom trial was developed where Dr. Philip Nitschke is called to defend his position on Euthanasia. Choose a defense attorney, a district attorney and various witnesses. Should Dr. Nitschke be treated as a criminal, or as humanitarian kind doctor?
